A new kind of neighbor: shared solar in agricultural Rockbridge

  • For the Washington and Lee journalism major, there are several classes you take to graduate, but none are as impressive or as looming during your four-year career at the college than in-depth reporting. For four weeks the spring term of your senior year, journalism students create a multi-media project on a topic important to the greater Rockbridge community. The topics are selected under the guidance of a journalism professor, in our case Doug Cumming, and Michael Todd, our resident expert in all things multimedia. Throughout the course, you work as a team to create a project that ties together all the classes and all of the skills you have picked up during your time at Washington and Lee.

  • The majority of our project takes place out in the community, or the field, as we journalism folk like to say. We went out to Donaldsburg and Mackeys Lane for the majority of our reporting. Our editing and factually meetings take place mainly on Washington and Lee’s campus located in Lexington, VA

  • Grace Mamon, Crawford Humphreys and Mary Alice Russell are the contributors to this project. If you want to learn more about us you can read more in our biography section

What is your neighbor like? Are you friends, or is your neighbor an innovation in alternative energy? Across Virginia, and pretty soon in Rockbridge County, people will meet a new kind of neighbor: the solar “farm.” On 25 acres of agricultural land, there is a proposal to build 9,500 solar panels. What would you think of that kind of neighbor?
